Rinku Devi, 28, aged 28 conceived her sons a month apart with eggs from different ovaries during successive menstrual cycles.
The wife of an army intelligence officer, Rinku was prepared for the birth of twins, but was even more surprised than the doctors when she found out during labor that they were not twins at all, and that she had two separate wombs.
“I didn’t know how to react. I was in pain and quite scared. I had not heard of anything like this before. I got to know about the rarity and severity of this condition days after my delivery…I am very happy and feel proud to have survived this,” said Rinku.
The children were born via caesarian section, defying one in 50 million odds. The condition is known asuterus didelphys, or double uterus. They were both premature, weighing 4 pounds, 4 ounces and 3 pounds, three ounces.
In this most rare condition, each uterus is connected to the fallopian tube that faces its ovary. With its occurrence, pregnancy has its challenges as premature birth, higher rates of infertility, spontaneous abortion, intrauterine growth retardation, and postpartum bleeds can result.
For Rinku Devi and her happy brood, two wombs are definitely better than one!

India's Gandhi undergoes successful surgery abroad
NEW DELHI - India's most powerful politician, Sonia Gandhi, has undergone successful surgery in the United States for an undisclosed medical condition, the ruling Congress party spokesman said on Thursday.
"She has undergone surgery and her condition is satisfactory," Janardhan Dwivedi, who is the party's general secretary, told reporters.
Gandhi heads the country's ruling Congress party and her son Rahul is seen as the prime minister-in-waiting.

India schoolgirl defies tradition to reject child marriage
BHILWARA, India - Her fate looked sealed when her family began organising the nuptial celebrations. But the bride-to-be, a shy schoolgirl from a remote village in western India, wasn't ready to say "I do".
In a region where patriarchy and age-old customs dictate a woman's life from birth to death, 15-year-old Sapna Meena in April joined a small but growing number of girls who are standing up against the widespread practice of child marriage in India.
"My family was in the midst of planning my wedding,"recalled Sapna, her black hair pinned in a bun and a gold stud in her nose, as she sat on a step outside her home in Badakakahera village in Rajasthan state.
"My grandfather had decided that while he was alive he wanted to see that I get married and settled. I was scared to say anything against it at first.
"I went to my mother and told her I wanted to study more and get a job, and only after that would I get married," added the girl, who is from a subsistence farming community that ekes out a living by growing crops like wheat and maize.
But Sapna didn't stop there. She went to local officials in the city of Bhilwara - some three hours by bus - to seek advice and press home the point to her family that the legal age for marriage in India is 18.
The authorities played a mediating role and her family suspended the wedding plans. What's more, Sapna was awarded a certificate of gallantry by the government for being an "agent of change" in her community.
Gender rights activists say Sapna is proof that, through education and exposure to the modern world, girls are beginning to take decisions over their own lives and are helping to lift the curse of early marriage that has plagued India for centuries.
While India's rapid economic growth over the past decade has exposed more people to new ideas about anti-discrimination through media, the Internet and tourism, early marriage remains a reality for almost half the country's female population.
Some 47 per cent of young women aged between 20 and 24 years married before 18, according to the government's latest National Family Health Survey.
And despite social welfare programmes that have improved the lives of many rural women, experts say the practice remains one of the biggest obstacles to the development of women in India.
Rural, poor, less educated girls and those from central, western and eastern regions of the country are most vulnerable to the practice, rights groups say.
They add that the issue cuts across every part of woman's development - creating a vicious cycle of malnutrition, poor health and ignorance.
A child bride is more likely to drop out of school and have serious complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Her children are also more likely to be underweight and lucky to survive beyond the age of five.
Rajasthan - one of India's premier tourist destinations where millions flock annually to its ancient fortresses, camel-back desert safaris and forests teeming with wildlife - has some of the highest rates of early marriage in the country.
At religious festivals such as "Akha Teej", hundreds of girls as young as 10, dressed in traditional red saris and adorned in gold, are married off in dusty villages and small towns across this poor, drought-prone region.
"A lot is to do with the family economy," said Ranjana Kumari, director of the Centre for Social Research, a think-tank focusing on women's rights. "Parents think the sooner they marry their daughters and get rid of the financial burden, the better.
"It's also about family honour. There is a whole lot of hysteria woven around the issue of maintaining a girl's chastity before marriage and attaching honour to it. So parents want their daughters married quickly before something happens."
India tightened laws prohibiting child marriage in 2006, with parents, priests, police or local leaders liable for imprisonment of up to two years and fines of 100,000 rupees (S$2,730).
But activists say the law is poorly enforced - with few prosecutions and even fewer convictions - and deeply flawed.
Prosecutions can only happen if the child herself complains officially - a huge hurdle for most girls who know little about their rights, are under immense societal pressure and have little access to sympathetic listeners.
Even so, education and other initiatives by non-governmental agencies are making a small yet important impact on girls in some of India's poorest villages where conservative, male-dominated views are ingrained.
For example, adolescent girls clubs run by organisations like UNICEF provide a space for rural girls to get together and find solidarity in issues that concern them, such as not being able to go to school or being forced into marriage.
"They learn about their rights such as the legal age for marriage, or the right to education," said Sudha Murali, UNICEF's senior child protection officer.
"While they are nervous about challenging their families, there are now girls who are becoming bolder and are bringing changes in their villages."
Sapna said her 70-year-old grandfather, who was the main proponent for her early marriage, now speaks proudly of how others in the village want to follow her example.
"There are so many bad things that happen if you marry young," said the teenager, who wants to become a teacher, doctor or policewoman.
"You can't finish your education, and you have to go and stay with your husband and in-laws at such a young age and you have to have babies."
"I'll help explain to my neighbours that they could educate (their children). Then they will get good jobs and their lives will not be wasted, but will be much better. They will have peace in their lives."

It’s a scene right out of a horror movie: A young woman is claiming that her husband of three years has been forcefully drawing blood from her arms with a syringe, putting it into a glass, and drinking it.
The 22-year old woman, who lives in the Damoh district of Madhya Pradesh, was married to Mahesh Ahirwar, an agricultural laborer in 2007 in a Shikarpura village. He started drinking her blood a few months later, claiming it made him strong. He even did it while she was pregnant, though she didn’t start protesting until after she gave birth. Any attempt at resisting would result in her husband violently attacking her.
She finally had enough and, in early July, fled with her baby to her the house of her parents. She told her sad tale to her father, who took her to the police, but the local police claimed it wasn’t in their jurisdiction. As a result, she had to return to the Hindoriya police station, which is in the area where she lived, to open up a case.
Sadly, neither they nor the previous district opened up a case against the husband. Thankfully, when the townspeople of Shikarpura learned about this injustice, they decided to help, ultimately resulting in the Hindoriya police opening up a case, stating she was physically tortured by her husband.

She is the first ever Indian to break into the top 30 WTA rankings. Mirza has defeated many top players, including Svetlana Kuznetsova and Martina Hingis.
In April 2003, Mirza made her debut in the India Fed Cup team, winning all three singles matches. She also won the 2003 Wimbledon Championships Girls' Doubles title, teaming up with Alisa Kleybanova of Russia.
Mirza is the highest ranked female tennis player ever from India, with a career high ranking of 27 in singles and 18 in doubles. She is the first Indian woman to be seeded in a Grand Slam tennis tournament. She was the first Indian woman to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament at the 2005 U.S. Open, defeating Mashona Washington, Maria Elena Camerin and Marion Bartoli. In winning, with Mahesh Bhupathi, the mixed doubles event at the 2009 Australian Open, she became the first Indian woman to win a Grand Slam title.
In 2005, Mirza reached the third round of the Australian Open, losing to eventual champion Serena Williams. On 12 February 2005, she became the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title, defeating Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine in the Hyderabad Open Finals.
Mirza had had the best results of her career during the 2007 summer hardcourt season, finishing eighth in the 2007 U.S. Open Series standings. She reached the final of the Bank of the West Classic and won the doubles event with Shahar Pe'er, and reached the quarterfinals of the Tier 1 Acura Classic.
At the 2007 U.S. Open, she reached the third round before losing to Anna Chakvetadze. In the mixed doubles, she reached quarterfinals with her partner Mahesh Bhupathi and the quarterfinals in the women's doubles with Bethanie Mattek, including a win over number two seeds Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur.

Mirza was eliminated in the first round of the 2008 Beijing Olympics when she retired in her match against Iveta Benešová because of a right wrist injury. She made it through the first round at Women's Doubles in Beijing with Sunitha Rao, but lost in the second round to Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dinara Safina. Throughout 2008, Mirza was plagued by a slew of wrist injuries, requiring her to withdraw from several matches including those of the Roland Garros and US Open Grand Slams.
At 2009 Australian Open, in mixed doubles Sania Mirza picked up her first Grand Slam title. Partnered with Mahesh Bhupathi, she beat Nathalie Dechy (France) and Andy Ram (Israel) 6–3, 6–1 in the final in Melbourne. She then entered the Pattaya Women's Open Tournament in Bangkok where she reached the finals after a string of good performances. She lost the finals to Vera Zvonareva 7–5, 6–1. She made the semis in doubles in the same tournament.
At the 2010 US Open – Women's Singles Qualifying where she won three straight matches. She defeated Ksenia Lykina, Elena Bovina, Catalina Castaño to qualify for the main draw. In main draw she defeated qualifier Michelle Larcher De Brito 6–3,6–2. In next round she went down to 20th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6–2,6–4.
　
In October, she represented India at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, as the 2nd seed. She defeated Brittany Teei, Marina Erakovic, and Olivia Rogowska before losing to Australia's Anastasia Rodionova in the final. In doubles, she partnered with India's Rushmi Chakravarthi, losing in the semifinals to Anastasia Rodionova and Sally Peers. Then for the Bronze Medal match, Mirza and Rushmi Chakravarthi beat fellow Indians Poojashree Venkatesha and Nirupama Sanjeev.
　
In November, she represented India at the 2010 Asian Games. The unseeded Indian defeated Venise Wing Yau Chan in first round. Next she defeated 6th seed Shuai Zhang in straight sets 6–2,6–2 to enter into quarterfinal. In quarterfinal Mirza won against 2nd seed Tamarine Tanasugarn 6–2,6–3 to move in semi final, where she went down fighting to 3rd seed Akgul Amanmuradova 7–6(7),3–6,4–6 and won Bronze Medal in singles. In Mixed Doubles she partnered with Vishnu Vardhan losing in the finals to Yung-Jan Chan and Tsung-Hua Yang, win Silver Medal.
　
Starting with World no. 141, in 2011, she competed at the 2011 Australian Open – Women's Singles Qualifying where she won three straight matches to qualify for the main draw. In the first round she went down fighting to former world no. 1 Justine Henin 5–7,6–3,6–1. She partnerd Voracova for doubles but lost in the first round also.
Mirza breezed through the first round of 2011 French Open where she beat Kristina Barrois of Germany in straight sets, 6–3,6–3. Then in Round 2, she went down fighting 12th seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, 2–6, 4–6.
　
For mixed doubles, she has partnered fellow Indian Rohan Bopanna and the pair faced Chuang Chia-jung (Chinese Taipei) and Marcin Matkowski (Poland) in the first round, and they lost 7–6(4), 7–6(2).
In 2004 she was awarded the Arjuna award by the Indian Government. In 2006, Mirza was awarded a Padma Shri, India's fourth highest honor for her achievements as a tennis player.
