The photos showed the man beating the woman, holding her down so that she could not resist, pulling at her hair and smacking her face. She can be seen shying away from the man in the last picture. The website reported that the man had threatened to continue beating her if she did not listen to him.

According to the website, the man said that they were from Anhui province, situated in eastern China, and had travelled to Zhejiang province as migrant workers.

Netizens comments ranged from anger at the man's behaviour and sympathy for the woman to wondering why the couple behaved in such an abusive manner.

The man said that his wife disobeyed him, as she wanted the both of them to apply for a working certificate together, despite him saying that having one will suffice.
