A recent earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale in Taiwan and a reckless comment made by Zhang Lan had the Taiwanese media talking for days.
The mother-in-law of actress Barbie Hsu, Zhang Lan said she "loves earthquakes" and added "There was also an earthquake when I was in Hualien. I think I have the power to shake Taiwan with earthquakes!"
Although she quickly clarified her statement, "It's not the love [for earthquakes], but what I meant was it is an honour to be able to be with everyone at such hard times," baffled reporters who took no heed of her explanations.
When asked about the difference in the amount donated from Barbie's wedding dowries and the latter's promised donation to charity, Zhang Lan lost her temper and exclaimed, "All of you are very mean! I don't like Taiwan anymore!
"I refuse to comment on this, how dare you frame someone like this..." she responded, putting the interview to a stop.
Chinese TV and radio personality Clara Chou criticised Zhang Lan's comments on Taiwan and called it "too indiscreet". She said that Zhang Lan will "bring about negative consequences" to low profile and hard working entrepreneurs in China.
Responding to her in-law's comment, Barbie's mother begged for forgiveness on Zhang Lan's behalf as she smilingly said, "[She) is still new to all this and regrets her words. She does not realise that although the Taiwanese media is made up of young reporters, they should not be treated as kids, for every word they write and print can lead to severe repercussions."
