Lina Chiam takes up NCMP seat

Lina Chiam

The Singapore People's Party's (SPP) Potong Pasir candidate Lina Chiam will take a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) seat in Parliament, reported The Straits Times

Mrs Chiam, who received approval from the party's central executive committee, will be supported by SPP's 15-member Policy Working Group led by Mr Benjamin Pwee.

In the Straits Times report, it was said that through Mrs Chiam, the party 'wishes to raise the concerns of all Singaporeans in Parliament - not just those in Potong Pasir, Hong Kah North and Bishan-Toa Payoh.'

Citing a media report, the paper said that Mrs Chiam accepted the offer to accommodate the wishes of Potong Pasir residents, and due to the narrow win by the People's Action Party.

'I promise to represent and speak up for the common Singaporean, and hold the PAP government publicly accountable to the people,' said Mrs Chiam.

Mrs Chiam had lost to PAP's Sitoh Yih Pin by 114 votes or 0.7 per cent. She was the best performing Opposition candidate at the general election, having secured 49.6 per cent of valid votes in the Potong Pasir SMC.
