Sinchon in Seodaemun-gu has the highest proportion of women in Seoul and Euljiro in Jung-gu the highest proportion of men, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said in analysis of registered residents as of end-2010 published Wednesday.
Euljiro-dong's male-to-female ratio was 159.9. Next came Daehak-dong, formerly Sillim 9-dong, in Gwanak-gu near Seoul National University, where the ratio was 148.1 with 14,000 men to 9,455 women. The reason is that Daehak-dong is a temporary home for a lot of young men in their 20s and 30s preparing for the national bar or civil service exams.
Namyeong-dong in Yongsan-gu came third with a male-femal ratio of 140, followed by Jongno 1,2,3 and 4-dongs combined (133) and Yeongdeungpo-dong in Yeongdeungpo-gu (128.8).
The proportion of women was highest in Sinchon-dong, Seodaemun-gu, home to students of Ewha Womans University, Yonsei University and Sogang University. The male-to-female ratio there was 82.7, or 9,714 men and 11,745 women.
Dongseon-dong in Seongbuk-gu near Sungshin Women's University was the runner-up with a ratio of 84.1, followed by Suseo-dong with 84.4 and Apgujeong-dong with 87.5, both in Gangnam, and Seogyo-dong, Mapo-gu, with 88.4.
Overall the population in Seoul is slightly skewed in favor of women at 98.09, with 5.237 million men (49.5 percent) and 5.339 million (50.5 percent). Men briefly outnumbered women between 2000 and 2003.
Kang Byung-ho at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, said, "The longer life expectancy of women and an aging population are thought to be the main reasons why the proportion of women in the city is higher."
