Singapore is a wealthy enclave and has a population of five million people, 200,000 of which are foreign maids mostly from the Philippines. One lucky lady and devoted servant, who refused to be named for fear of jealous reprisals in the poverty-stricken Philippines, inherited 6 million Singapore dollars (more than $4 million US) from her late employer after more than 20 years of faithful service.
“I am the luckiest maid in Singapore, with or without the money… There were no secrets between us. I was not surprised at all when she told me how much I was going to get,” said the 47-year-old single woman identified only by the pseudonym, Christine.
Her benefactor was Quek Kai Miew, a medical doctor and philanthropist who died last year at the age of 66. Due to the fact that she had also cared for the doctor’s late mother, she had been informed back in 2008 when the will was executed that she was to be a beneficiary of the estate. Her inheritance included cash and a luxury apartment near the Orchard Road shopping belt.
“Christine” is now applying for permanent residency in Singapore, but does not believe her new found wealth will in any way alter her current lifestyle.
“I am still who I was before. I cannot behave differently because I have money now,” she told the press.
Benefactor and maid became close friends and genuinely cared for each other. Christine was truly devastated when Quek passed away suddenly last year.
The twists and turns of life’s heartbreaks and challenges are very strange indeed.
Good things (as well as bad) can happen to any of us at any time.
